My SLR has a lens whose aperture can open up quite wide. The lowest F-Stop on my Pentax K1000 is 2.0. When you are taking pictures and your aperture is open that wide, the depth of field for your photo is quite tight. This means that a very small area of your photo will appear to be in focus. When taking photos of people this is useful, as it will place the emphasis of the photo on them. My digital camera can take photos at an F-Stop of 2.8, but for whatever reason the depth of field seems larger in my digital camera. I really want to get a digital SLR.
