Active Surplus

Active Surplus: you’ll never know what you’re going to find.

[Active Surplus](http://www.activesurplus.com/) used to have a very large street presence on Queen; their shop was huge. I’m guessing it was too huge, because they closed it down and moved to a unit above the space they used to have. (At least I think it’s above their former store.) This summer they redid the front of what little space they have on Queen, and I think it looks pretty good. They might not need the dude that stands in front of the store asking people to come check it out any longer.

  1. I was in the shoe store beside Active Surplus one day buying shoes and the whole time I was there you could clearly hear that guy over everything. At one point I just burst out laughing and asked the clerk if he felt an urge to kill the guy. I can't imagine hearing "Aaaaaaaactive Surplus, you never know what you're going to find folks" over and over, all day long.

  2. I'm sure the guy hates saying it as much as people hate hearing it. Most be maddening to repeat the same thing again and again and again. In Tokyo many shops have some person standing in front of them yelling for you to come check it out.

  3. I actually think its quite amazing that i can google "active surplus man" and there is actually a discussion posted about this dude. What I wonder is how much he gets paid, especially since that mullet has been well maintained for the entire time I have lived in Toronto. Although he may be annoying, and we may avoid him on the street, I do belive he is a Queen Street Icon.
