Piet Mondrian: The Evolution of Pure Abstract Paintings. ⇒
16 September 2014, early morning
It’s a shame they didn’t include the dates the various paintings were painted. The jump from Trees to Tableau #2 to Composition with Grey and Light Brown seems huge.
This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.
The cubism started in 1911 when he moved to Paris and in the next couple years evolved to become abstract.
He was visiting home (Netherlands) when world war I started and was stuck there for the whole war slowing becoming more abstract.
If I remember correctly the jump to grids (straight lines) was shortly after the war ended (when he was back in Paris).
So the big evolutions were in less than 10 year period (1911-1919) and then 25 years of the grids.
I thought he was afraid of trees (which is why he liked the grids and living in new York) so a little surprised by thew older tree paintings.

Cool, thanks for the art history lesson. It’s really interesting seeing how some artists evolve. When the Picasso exhibit was in town it was cool seeing how his paintings and sculptures from when he was very young were totally different: super realistic and boring, I suppose. And then he seemed to quickly figure out how his abstract art would worked.
