Dalit is the term those in the untouchables caste have given to themselves, which roughly translates to oppressed (as I understand things). Gandhi used the term Harijan to refer to untouchables, which means Children of God, and worked hard during his life to integrate the Dalits into Indian society. KR Narayanan a highly regarded man.

  1. Dr BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian constitution was also a dalit.

    On a sidenote, it seems that most articles regarding India at Wikipedia are disputed.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text.
