The Poster Child

I’m getting a little tired of being the poster child for the boards I sit on. And it really makes me wonder if I’m there because my skills got me there or it’s because I am a. ethnic, b. female, c. young (and I’m Ali’s sister)…. Thank you Affirmative Action, you have made me doubt my credentials.

hey i’m ethnic, female and even younger and i didn’t even get an interview for the waste management committee. Trust me, AA only carries you so far— you have the qualification. Don’t let your doubt tell you otherwise.

And you’re hot, that always helps. Yeah, I just wrote that. You can join the class action sexual harassment lawsuit if you want. But with the amount of people in on it, the payout probably won’t be that good.

  3. sh!ma says,

haha. Thanks Graham, I’ll get right one it with the lawsuit.

What are you up to now that school is done?

  4. Graham says,

I actually have a job with the City of Toronto. Assistant Planner, Committee of Adjustments, Toronto & East York District. I saw your name as a committee member for whatever District you are in.
I’ve only been there 3 days, so I haven’t really done anything yet. Now that I work for the City, I figure in 6 months I’ll be the Chief Planner.

  5. sh!ma says,

Really? Do you know Phil? He use to work up in North York.

Hey if you’re still there in a year, you should try to go to the COA workshop/retreat thing they have. I’m not going this year, but I was going to go next year. I think they take 2 staff and 6 committee members. They’re having a boat ride this year..They don’t mess around!

  6. Graham says,

Yes, really. I have a job. I don’t know Phil. I don’t think. I meet a lot of people this past week. Nobody named Phil works in my office area on the 1st floor at City Hall.

I’m sure I’ll be there in a year. I’m set for life. Union job. Nice pay. New Porsche and yacht on order. Trophy wife. Etc. Etc.

The COA workshop/retreat sounds pretty sweet. I’ll try and get on that.

  7. Jason Tsang says,

I thought they were taking more staff than just two people.

I hope I can go to the OACA conference next year too. We’ll see how that goes.

Graham: nice to see one of Shima’s classmates getting to work as a CoA planner in Toronto. Too bad you weren’t up North (I think there was also a vacancy that just got filled). That said, you’ll probably see a wider variety of apps down in South District.

If you do see Phil C., say hello to him for me too. He’s one of the Senior Planners for the West section of South District (I guess he’d be on the 18th floor of the East Tower).
