Pecha Kucha Toronto

For this weeks “Urban Adventure Friday nights in the City” event we went to Pecha Kucha on Friday. Adam had told us about Pecha Kucha a few weeks prior and made it sound like something every design/planning/architecture student/professional should attend. And so we did. Ram and I only stayed for the first half but Fadi and Mark (who was working at the event) stayed for the whole thing. Over all it was a good first Pecha Kucha in Toronto. Most presenters adhered to the 6 minutes and 40 second time limit but the majority were sort of rambling about projects their firm had completed in the past. There was really no substance. I liked the presentation by Plant Architects and Evergreen best. I have to ask Fadi how the other groups did. David Miller, a.k.a.my photo buddy, was present and concluded the first half of the event by talking about some of the projects he liked that were around the city. He’s such an energetic mayor. I wish he would stopped complaining though. Here are some pictures of the event Ram posted. I really like the interior of the Design Exchange. It’s a very pretty room. I was telling Ram I liked it more than the Carlu, but he wasn’t impressed with me! heh..

I like the Carlu more, not that the Design Exchange isn’t nice. I think they should have had half as many speakers, and given them 12 minutes each. Some speakers handled the limit well, but most sort of panicked as their slides flew past them faster than they though they would have. Good event all in all though. I can’t believe more of your friends didn’t show up. It seemed to feature every hot shot architecture firm in the city.

i had the chance to visit both the Carlu and the Design Exchange about 3 years ago at the T.O. Doors Open event. both are beautiful in their own contextes. i personally enjoyed that the Carlu gave out one of those mini cds with flashy photos and a short powerpoint on it. neat! =)

Thanks for coming out to my event! It was the first Pecha Kucha held in Toronto so I appreciate your comments. I’d have to say that Mayor Miller and Christina Zeidler gave the best presentations of the evening. For a young, artistic entrepreneur, Christina really impressed the old-school architects and designers in the room.

Hope to see you at the next PK!

Hey, glad you went. Do you think you’ll go to the next one? I’d really like to start going, hopefully there will be another in Shanghai before I leave. But either way, it would be fun to all go together. I figure they’ll probably get better as people get more used to the format. See you later. And I haven’t forgotten about your polos!

Yes, I’ll go to the next one. I’m kind of sad not that many people came… but hopefully I’ll get the word out earlier next time.

    yay. Can I have a blue and/or brown polo please?! I can’t wait! :D
