You know that tunnel between York Mills and Sheppard Station?

This has been bugging me for some time now. There is a tunnel that runs perpendicular to the Yonge Street Subway line between York Mills and Sheppard and I’ve only noticed it recently. This wouldn’t be news worthy except I think I’m losing my mind and I’m scared that
a. it doesn’t exist, and it’s a pigment of my imagination; and
b. they are going to take it away some how (put a wall up)

I’ve tried to look for information on it online, but no one mentions it, which makes me skeptical of its existence. Anyone know what it is? Or know what I’m talking about? Anyways, next time you’re on the Yonge line, look to the west side of the train. Mid-way between the two stations you’ll see the other tunnel. The train is always going way too fast, and I haven’t gotten a very good look at where it leads, but it’s a long tunnel as far as I can tell.

I know exactly the person to ask this question. Will get back to you as soon as I hear anything..

Jason referred me to your page to help with your question. The ‘tunnel’ that you’re referring to is likely the emergency exit that’s located about halfway between York Mills and Sheppard stations. The emergency exit sits between the two tunnels and it connects both the southbound and northbound tunnels.

Interestingly there were plans for intermediate stations between the major streets (e.g. “Glencairn” between Eglinton and Lawrence; “Glen Echo” between Lawarence and York Mills; and “Empress” — now North York Centre — between Sheppard and Finch). That said, there was never a station planned between York Mills and Sheppard. As a result the tunnel should have no interruptions over that distance, other than the aforementioned emergency exit.

    Hope this helps…
