- Virtual Reality is going to change the world.
Notch discusses Oculus Rift getting bought by Facebook for 2 billion dollars. Choice quote, “I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.” They raised 2.5 million dollars on Kickstarter. I’m not sure how much equity their fans ended up with.

One of the company’s former CEOs, Jean Monty agreed to help fund and support an academic investigation into the company’s failure, which resulted in a massive, unprecedented study out of the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa.
The study is available online.

- Silicon's Valley's Brutal Ageism.
An engineer in his forties recently told me about meeting a tech CEO who was trying to acquire his company. “You must be the token graybeard,†said the CEO, who was in his late twenties or early thirties. “I looked at him and said, ‘No, I’m the token grown-up.’ â€
Everything about Silicon Valley sounds terrible.

- Julie Ann Horvath Describes Sexism And Intimidation Behind Her GitHub Exit.
Her story is crazier than I thought it would be. Even if you aren’t interested in startup scene inside baseball her complaints describe such a crazy train wreck of a situation. (For example, one of the founder’s wives was harassing her.) GitHub actually has a pretty good and on point response, more or less confirming her story. It’s pretty disappointing she had to publicly rage-quit to get anything done at that company. (This will no doubt complicate her career going forward.) This entire situation seems thoroughly avoidable. Regular 1-1 meetings seems like a good first step, but it sounds like there would be no one to meet with the way GitHub is currently structured. (Who needs managers—oh wait.)
#
- Sexist culture and harassment drives GitHub's first female developer to quit.
The developer behind the passion projects series at Github has quit. It’s disappointing just how shitty the tech industry can be. No response from GitHub yet.
