Tangiers @ the Horseshoe
29 October 2004, terribly early in the morning
The Tangiers are amazing. There is no doubt about that. They are one of the best bands I’ve heard live ever. Tyler had been bigging this band up like they were the second coming; he was definitely right to do so.
Tyler had informed earlier in the week of the Tangiers show at the Horseshoe. I had told him originally that I probably wouldn’t go. The show was at 11:30 at night, which was when I usually head to bed. Since I’ve started working I’ve become a bit of an old man. Tyler invited me to his place for drinks before hand. It seemed like a good way to spend the night. Part of the reason I wanted to move closer to downtown was to be able to do stuff like this. So I changed my mind about going that evening, a little before the show would start.
I got to Tyler’s place a bit after 10:00. His condo is amazing. I can’t begin to describe how nice it is; so I won’t try. I just don’t think it would be right to write about this night out and not mention is condo. God damn.
Now, after enjoying a drink with Tyler and a few of his friends, the lot of us headed out to the Horseshoe. The first act was on when we got there, and was not really what any of us were interested in. They were quite different then the Tangiers, so I’m not sure why they were opening for them. We drank what we were told was Keats, but tasted and smelt like some sort of sweaty sock, while we waited for the Tangiers.
The Tangiers got on the stage a little late, closer to midnight. The band consists of 4 dudes: a drummer, a keyboard player, a dude that sings and plays the guitar, and a dude that sings and plays the bass. Both lead singers were quite good. I think I liked the lead guitarist’s voice more, but I think most of the songs the bass player was singing I enjoyed more.
I’m not sure how to describe the music. I’m not too on top of the various genres and sub-genres of rock music. After Elastica broke up I kind of gave up on guitar fuelled music. Maybe someone else who has heard the band can chime in with some bands out there who these guys are similar to. Anyway trying to box the band in some category isn’t so important. They were absolutely amazing live.
