The Toronto Star: Ottawa urged to probe Tamil threats. ⇒

   15 March 2006, lunch time

Here the Tamil threat isn't street gangs but the LTTE extorting money from the Tamil community in Toronto. (This article is in response to a recent report put out by New York-based Human Rights Watch.) The Globe and Mail also carries the story. Some group approached my family for money not too long ago, but my mom told them no and they left. I suspect that whatever groups are collecting money push the matter if they are dealing with people that look like they could be bullied. My mom, who deals with customers at Canadian Tire all day long, doesn't take a lot of shit. Tamilnet comes out against the report, complaining about the research methods used, and whether it accurately reflects what is going on in Toronto (and London). My feelings: if one person being extorted, in Canada of all places, that is one too many.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
