- The handsome man who was the Alien.
The original Alien was played by Bolaji Badejo, a tall-ass man.

- Masters of the Universe: 25th Anniversary is coming out on Blu-ray.
I own this movie on VHS. I don’t want to say it was the greatest movie to come out of the 80s, so I won’t. He-Man! Get hyped, people.

- Being Deaf.
At 21, I’m the youngest employee at 1000memories, the startup where I work1. I’m also their first deaf employee. At a startup, I likely always will be the first. For a startup to succeed, the team must communicate well together. Since I can’t hear, that presents a large challenge for my employers.
This is a fascinating (and a little bit heartbreaking) story.

- "So if we continue voting like this in the (House of Commons), there'll be no b-day for me this year?" tweeted NDP MP Hoang Mai.
The Conservatives are trying to fuck up Canada—obviously—with their crazy budget. The opposition is there, fighting the good fight. Go Canada!

- Out of the Past.
To sum up, this is my reflex film. It’s what I turn to when there is no other hope. Though there are many very good reasons to love this film, my enthusiasm is now well beyond the bounds of rationality, and I won’t have it any other way.
I need to watch this movie. I feel the same way about Chungking Express. (For example, re-reading my review of the film made me feel more than a little bit happy.)

- Man Up, Bieber.
Justin Bieber is now 18 years old. Which means, technically, he’s an adult. But the question remains: Is he a man? (If you just laughed, congratulations: You’re mean.) GQ sent Drew Magary to spend one wild night with the Beeb in Los Angeles right after his big birthday, with explicit orders not to come back until we knew the answer.
Spoiler alert: not really a man.

- "Niggas" in Practice Jay-Z, Gwyneth Paltrow, and when white people can say the word.
Apparently Gwyneth Paltrow tweeted “Ni**as in paris for real.” and the Internet went apeshit. I like Jay Smooth’s take on things. I think she should have just doubled down and said “Niggas in paris for real.” because who reading that isn’t filling in those asterisks?

- I've been playing the same game of Civilization II for almost 10 years.
My coworker pointed me to this reddit thread this morning. In his game the world in 3991 AD “is a hellish nightmare of suffering and devastation. There are 3 remaining super nations … each competing for the scant resources left on the planet after dozens of nuclear wars have rendered vast swaths of the world uninhabitable wastelands.” This is pretty damn amazing.

- Indie Game: The Movie is available for purchase.
I supported the project on Kickstarter some time ago. The film seems to have gone on to gain much acclaim. I assume this is because of my contribution. It actually played at HotDocs this year, but I didn’t get a chance to go see it. Today the guys behind the film released the film for digital download. Everyone I know who has seen the movie has said it’s pretty great, so you might want to check it out. Being a backer I got to pick up my free copy. I also got a free copy of the soundtrack, by Jim Guthrie of Sword & Sworcery fame.

- Twitter Gives you the Bird.
Twitter has achieved in less than six years what Nike, Apple, and Target took decades to do: To be recognizable without a name, just an icon. If you go to Twitter’s home page, welcoming you at the top is the new bird, and nothing more.
The new logo is a pretty great improvement over the old bird logo they were using, and certainly feels a lot more iconic.

- Kobo, Tumblr, and Readmill Discuss Social Reading at BEA.
Both Fershleisher and O’Donoghue also noted that their youngest members tend to be the most active social readers, which means we may still see behaviors or even genres emerge around social reading. In one example, O’Donoghue said that one young Kobo reader is using Kobo Pulse to rewrite parts of a Hunger Games book, and other readers are then rating the fanfic version — and this is happening alongside the original text.
The future is now?
