Persian Food

   18 December 2003, mid-afternoon

I went to Zaffron last night for some Persian food. The restaurant was quite good, and a nice change of pace from the usual venues my friends and I check out. There were seven of us out, Shima, Gary, Ghrace, Rishi, Dave, Martha and myself. I will probably post pictures from that night on We Must Abuse the Broadband.

I’m still a bit sick, but not that bad at all really. Unfortunately, the medicine I was given to take by my Doctor knocks me out.

I am Home

16 December 2003, the wee hours

I am back in toronto. Bored? Give me a ring at home. Right now I have the flu so I really don’t know how social I will be. Planning on getting Persian food this wednesday, which has me very excited.

One More Essay

   13 December 2003, evening time

I need to write one more essay before I can say this term is over. I’ve managed to do nothing for the past two days, so I will need to change that if I plan on leaving for Toronto on Monday. Going to Linh’s end-of-term-birthday-christmas party tonight, and I think that should be a lot of fun.

Yesterday I went to Philthy McNasty’s with Cathy, Lien, Flora and Gary. We met Shima and her friends in line. Well, we basically budded very close to the front of the line. We pissed off the guys right behind us, but we managed to make things up by letting them go in front of us. They didn’t let people in for the longest time, but finally the bouncer said, “everyone up to here,” and pointed at the group in front of us. Damn. The problem here was that Shima and company were on one side of the line, and we were on the other side, the side that wasn’t going to be let in. Ghrace sweet talked the bouncer and he let me and my chinaman contingent in. “Everyone except whitey” were his words, or something to that effect.

It was a fun night out. More or less.

Origins

   12 December 2003, early evening

I finally finished my Wolverine origin story graphic novel, appropriately enough entitled Origins. An interesting story, no doubt. I enjoyed the comic. I recommend it to x-men fans, as it explains quite clearly how wolverine came to be wolverine. It’s very much out of left field.

I once had a dream, so I packed up and split for the city.

The End is Near

   12 December 2003, mid-afternoon

I handed in my CS 462 exam today. I couldn’t figure out the half of the last question, but I managed to get the other 5 and a half so I think that should be all good, assuming I didn’t make any mistakes. (That’s probably a big assumption.) I need to write an essay for my history class and I will be done all my work for the term, but right now I am tired and don’t really feel like writing much of anything.

Application Number One

   11 December 2003, early evening

Went to the post office today to drop off my application for the University of Toronto. Hopefully it makes it there on time, is free of errors, and such a stellar application that they accept me. [Update: It apparently wasn’t one or more of these things.] That would be nice. My Waterloo application will get handed in tomorrow.

Another Movie

   10 December 2003, evening time

Went to the Princess cinema again last night to watch a french film, L’auberge Espagnole. Nabeel recommended we go watch the movie, and it was a good call on his part. An excellent film, very entertaining, about a boy who goes to Spain on an exchange and lives with a group of other European kids living in Spain.

The Animation Show

9 December 2003, terribly early in the morning

Watched the animation show at the Princess. Some of the cartoons were really good, some not so. The ones by Don Hertzfeldt were quite funny. My favourite of the bunch was the last cartoon, das rad (the rocks). There are lots of good cartoons, so I recommend you rent the film if you can, but I really don’t think it is worth spending a lot of money to go see at a cinema.

Linear Optimization: Before

   8 December 2003, mid-afternoon

I’m in a good mood. Not sure why, but I am. I’m hoping CO 350 is not going to be as big a bitch as the other exams I have written so far. I don’t think it will be, but you never know. I can’t wait to be done. This term is enough to make me drop out of school and take up break dancing full time.

ram is the answer for me
ram is right
ram is ram
ram is running
ram is the culprit
ram is important

Shima sent me some googlisms of my nickname.

ramanan is another unfortunate singer
ramamnan is adamant on making false anologies
ramanan is isomorphic
ramanan is a well respected anthropologist
ramanan is one of the best story

Shima also sent me some googlisms of my proper name.

I Study

   7 December 2003, evening time

What’s new? Nothing of course. I spent the day studying with Steph at the library. I don’t have the energy, or the inclination, to study for CO 350 (Linear Optimization), so I left the library early. I figure I will get back to work at 7:00, and work hard till I am sick of it. After CO 350 I just have an essay and a take home exam to worry about.

Shima’s been going on all term about how great Queer Eye for the Straight Guy is. I finally watched an episode with her last night. The show is very entertaining, I can really see the appeal. The show is like What not to Wear, Trading Spaces, and a cooking show all wrapped into one, and it’s hosted by five gay dudes. I recommend you watch it if you haven’t yet.

Graph Theory: After

   6 December 2003, late evening

God damn. That was unpleasant. I think I may have done worse on my Rings exam, back in 3A, but that is debatable. I hope I passed the exam. I think I did, but one can never be too sure of these sorts of things.

Hey Ya!

   5 December 2003, early evening

I think the Outkasts are the best rap group to come out of the south for sure. I’m listening to the song Hey Ya! right now. The song is excellent. You can buy it from the iTunes music store if you feel so inclined. I didn’t personally, but I think I might if I lived in America. (Well I’m really not sure on that point. It took like 2 minutes to download it from less then legitimate sources. Paying 99 cents to download it from legitimate ones? Something to think about.) Shake it like a Polaroid picture.

Crypto: After

   5 December 2003, mid-afternoon

Just finished the crypto exam. I didn’t think it was as hard as the midterm, though it was hardly easy. I think I did fine anyways. Wish they’d tell you your mark on the exam as soon as you hand it in. Now I have to worry about graph theory.

Crypto: Before

5 December 2003, terribly early in the morning

It’s the night before the crytpo exam. I don’t want to study anymore. I think I may sleep and hope for the best tomorrow. This week has gone by so fast. I can’t believe it is already friday. I don’t trust my calculator so I may have to buy one in the morning. With Graph Theory still to be done on saturday tomorrow will be a long day!

Exams

   3 December 2003, late afternoon

Exam week is well underway. I haven’t been as productive as I could have been these first two days, so I am trying to make up for my poor work ethic now by working extra hard. My first exam will be this friday, and that exam is CO 485 (Crpyto). I suspect the exam will be quite hard, but we will have to wait and see if I am right about that. My second exam is the very next day, and that is CO 442 (Graph Theory). I can’t wait for these two exams to be done with. I need to do well so I don’t end up with an incredibly low mark in both classes.

Watched Gothika last night with Shima, Gary, Marveric and Antonia. The film was entertaining I would say, an interesting story. I didn’t find the film too scary, but Shima was jumping out of her chair whenever something scary was happening. Though her jumping out of her chair isn’t a good way to gauge how scary a film is I suppose.

Back to work for me. I’ll be back home in Toronto in two weeks, so everyone there should clear there schedule.

Wild Strawberries

2 December 2003, the wee hours

Just got back from watching Wild Strawberries, a film by Ingmar Bergman. Quite a melancholy film I would say, all about regret and taking stock in ones life. Walking back home, through the snow, in the dark, also felt quite melancholy. The term is almost over.

Using a Dedicated Swapfile Partition to Speed Up MacOS X

   30 November 2003, evening time

Using a Dedicated Swapfile Partition to Speed Up MacOS X. This article talks about how to create a separate partition for the swap files OS X creates. Most Unix systems require your swap files to be written to their own swap partitions, which are usually as large as the amount of RAM you have. Mac OS X does not require a separate swap partition, but some argue that having one would improve system performance.

Went to Rev last night. I wanted to go to the bomber, but Lien, Cathy and Flora were going to be at Rev, and Gary wanted to go there more. Fair enough. I’m glad I went there instead because they were playing some serious drum and bass in the purple room. It was wicked. I think everyone had a fun night out. Gary might not remember it all.
