The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

   12 December 2005, lunch time

I watched The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe last night with Dave. It is very much a children’s movie. I suppose that shouldn’t come as a surprise as the movie is based on the children’s books by C.S. Lewis. The movie looks really good. The visual effects people have done a good job bringing the more fantastic elements of the story to life. Tilda Swinton does a really good job playing the evil White Witch; the children do a good enough job playing their respective parts. Beyond that, I’m not sure the movie is worth watching if you aren’t already a fan of the books. I think the movie will be appealing to children regardless, but for adults I am not so sure. I think Dave and I both found the story a bit too childish, but then it’s a children’s story so it’s hardly fair to criticize.

  1. the reason why it’s so ‘childish’ might have something to do with the fact that the story is just that.. a story… unlike tolkien and lord of the rings, cs lewis didn’t create some elaborate fantasy world to every single minute detail like in middle earth… instead, the lion, witch & wardrobe is an allegory of christian teachings… i think it was meannt to let children see the story of christ (aslan) in a different light… the ‘childishness’ of the story would’ve had a greater appeal to the children which was probably his intent…

    k, enough. sory for rambling…

  2. Yes, I am well aware of the Christian elements in the story, and as I pointed out, am well aware it is a children’s story. My point was that it’s probably not a great movie to watch as an adult, unless you are willing to put up with the childishness of it all.

  3. yea… i guess you’re right. i never really thought about it when i first heard that they were doing a movie… i was always looking forward to watching it.. but now… not so much… i’ll be sadly dissapointed if it’s like those harry potter movies…

what did you think of lord of the rings?

  4. The Lord of the Rings movies were all excellent, but this isn’t Lord of the Rings. It’s a good movie, but it’s directed at an audience that isn’t my age. I don’t think it’s a bad film; you just need to go in expecting a children’s film.
