A painting of me

With friends like Maxtor, you don't need enemies. ⇒

The comments are worth a chuckle. People don't have much symapthy for Pete. I'm so paranoid about my photographs I have them sitting on a (real RAID1) external hard drive, and on another regular-ass external drive. I'm still not convinced the RAID1 is worth the trouble, but the instantaneous mirroring is fancy. So in theory everything is in three places, though they are all connected to my computer. (My comment on this post.)

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. Whenever I read stuff like this on your blog I will always go home and burn another copy of my photos on dvds.

I know a few photos from my old A300 have become corrupt from moving them between so many computers.

  2. We need to set up the family skynet server, which can also play Crysis. Yeah, it was a big step for me when I had to erase my photographs from my real live computer. Now they are on two externals.

  3. I keep irreplaceable data on my laptop, and sync it every few days to the RAID mirror on my desktop. But I’ve been toying with the idea of buying 2 external drives, giving 1 to a friend, and then we’ll each back up our data onto those drives. Then we’ll swap every so often and update our respective backups. That way, if my condo explodes, I’ll have a slightly out of date copy in another location, and her data is similarly protected.

it looks like 1TB+enclosure is under $200 now.

  4. I keep all my digital photographs on a RAID1 external enclosure. They are also backed up onto a external firewire drive as well. I have too many now, so they take up too much space on my hard drive. I also have a 500gb hard drive (or there abouts) that does time machine back ups, and also has my iTunes library on it. I need to get better organized with everything. It’s kind of annoying having all these drives on my desk.

  5. Yo we need to build that machine! I have a crazy video card just sitting around. We can strip the PC I got from Ryan for small parts to save a bit of money.

We will see how much I can invest in a machine at the end of the term.

  6. yeah, it sounds like your setup isn’t that different from mine Ram. I just think that for stuff like your photos — which you can’t ever buy back — it might be worth disaster-proofing by having a remote backup. That could take the form of anything as simple as a DVD in a safe-deposit box (or your office), or the super-connected remote server that your entire family feeds.

Don't be shy, you can comment too!

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
