SLA in killing spree in the 'safety zone', 73 killed, 160 wounded. ⇒

Don't click the link unless you're cool with a photograph of two dead children: TamilNet doesn't mess around. The government will 'win' this current war, I have no doubts on that. The problem for the government is that this will be at best an empty win. Stories like this one galvanize the Tamil population abroad. If the LTTE ever wanted to money again I'm quite certain there would be no shortage of people willing to offer it up, simply out of guilt, or rage, or whatever other emotions stories like this conjure up. There are horrible stories about what the LTTE is doing now, but they probably don't resonate the same way stories like this do. And more importantly, those abroad aren't affected directly by what the LTTE does in the least. The diaspora's children aren't the one who will be picking up guns to fight. Secondly, the LTTE isn't just a bunch of Tamil peoples running around in the jungle. They are essentially a multinational organization. Whatever network that exists to support their efforts within Sri Lanka is probably something that can't be dealt with militarily by the Sri Lankan government. My guess is the LTTE will disappear back into the jungle, and wage a guerilla war like they did for many years before.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
