Shima I hope you are paying attention.

  1. My iron count has always been low but not because I’m a serious athlete. It’s something I’ve had to deal with for years. I use to get dizzy spells when I would stand up all through high school. My iron count is usually too low to donate blood. That’s why I’ve been donating platelets instead for a few years now. But the doctor’s have never said I’m anemic.

I guess one day when I become a serious runner I will be more conscious of my iron levels.

On that note, do you think I can just show up and run a 10k without training?

  2. I should add that the Blood Services took my blood a month before my annual check up, and they insisted that I was totally normal. That was the day when I fainted and laid on a stretcher after donation. The screening test they do check your hemoglobin concentration, which can be an indicator of anemia. Iron depletion (tested by your ferritin test)is not part of your routine check.

People doing contact sports (karate?) can suffer from iron deficiency as well because of bruising (which destroys red blood cells). An easy prevention would be to take those multi vitamins tablets (my doctor recommended the no name version of “women’s one a day”) which gives you enough iron to supplement your diet.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
