It’s probably related to the affinity people have for trains. I like how streetcars look and sound, they seem more civilized than the loud grunting buses, but it’s utter hell to get stuck behind one in Toronto. It doesn’t make sense for mass transit to block two lanes of traffic for a minute every other block. Argh.

Exactly. They work on Spadina because they have their own right of way. Almost everywhere else, a bus would work better. King, Queen, and Bathurst have totally crap traffic which the streetcars definitely don’t help.

This one is easy. Streetcars are better because 1) they can carry more people than buses, 2) they are electric, so they dont pollute, and they can run underground if required, 3) once you have them, the vehicles tend to last alot longer than buses (look how old the TTC ones are). Obviously there are some implementation problems, like running down the middle of the street in mixed traffic, but I dont think they provide any worse service than a bus in the same position would
