A painting of me

Waiting for my Children. ⇒

   26 May 2009, mid-afternoon

A collection of portraits. "There are parents in our community who are forced to wait for many years to be joined by their children, after they first arrived in Canada as immigrants or refugees."

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. I was one of those children back in the day.

  2. When I saw Chien-Chi Chang give a talk in Toronto recently, he showed photos from a project he is working on now, which is about Chinese immigrants in New York. Most of the people he was photographing had been separated from their family for over a decade. It’s crazy.

  3. I was separated from my parents for almost 8 years.

There are more of us than people think.

My husband and his sister also stayed “back home” for almost a decade.

There is a real bond that is broken with that kind of separation.
My bond was with my grandparents. On a certain level, my mother and I never recovered from that separation.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
