A painting of me

The Unfairness Of It All. ⇒

   19 April 2010, early morning

‘Fairness’ creams are all over the place in South Asia. Being dark still caries a lot of stigma. You couldn’t turn on the TV without seeing an advert for some cream guaranteed to make you lighter. A lot of Western brands also sell them in India too; Oil of Olay and Dove are the first two brands that come to mind. The thing is, basically everyone in South India is more or less as dark as me. In Sri Lanka people are even darker. You’d think the standards for beauty would take that into account. I blame the North Indians. Anyway, i’m linking to this post about this subject because it popped up in my feed reader and the ‘science’ sounds totally ridiculous.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. This sort of thing is on par with Eastern Europeans and their obsession with blondes. Women who look ridiculous (to me) as blondes because their features just don’t suit it..not to mention their eyebrows.

Don't be shy, you can comment too!

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
