The Twitter Platform. ⇒

3rd parties can no longer run ads in programs that use the Twitter API. This means programs like the free version of Twitteriffic, that serves ads from the Deck, are no longer allowed to operate the way they do. Twitter claims:
Third party ad networks are not necessarily looking to preserve the unique user experience Twitter has created. They may optimize for either market share or short-term revenue at the expense of the long-term health of the Twitter platform. For example, a third party ad network may seek to maximize ad impressions and click through rates even if it leads to a net decrease in Twitter use due to user dissatisfaction.
I can’t say i’m aware of any ad supported clients that behave in a particular egregious way. Twitter’s ‘promoted tweets’ seem far from innovative, despite their claims to the contrary. It’s interesting to watch Twitter try to make money from their service now that they have a shit ton of users.
