How to be alone. ⇒
17 August 2010, early afternoon
What a lovely little film and poem. I have gone to concerts alone, movies alone, lunch alone, cafes alone, etc. I think being comfortable to do things by yourself is an important life skill. (I enjoy spending time with other people much much more. I am a social person.)
This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.
Russell Smith wrote about how much this video horrifies him in Thursday’s Globe.

Yeah, Shima said as much as well. Because I stopped reading the stupid-ass Globe and Mail I miss stuff like this.
I thought the article was interesting in that he seems to assume it’s about her life after breaking up with a man, but I didn’t get that sense at all. Most of the article seems to be making assumptions about her motives that really don’t strike me as being there. I saw the video as equally applicable to both women and men. Russell Smith seems to think women only understand themselves in relation to men. (Oh Snap?! Did I just make a sweeping generalization? I think I did.)
I don’t miss reading the Globe and Mail at all. It sucks there isn’t a paper I do enjoy reading.

And shockingly, most of the comments are in agreement with my take on the article. Where are all the racists and bigots?

Russell Smith is such a genital hygiene product. You’re right, he assumes it’s a) about women and b) about a breakup. Which is like assuming The Godfather is about robots, and then attacking it for failing to capture the robot experience.
There’s also this machismo to his writing, hidden behind a torrent of braggadocious progressivism: OF COURSE Russell Smith wouldn’t think twice about going anywhere alone – how dare you insinuate such a thing? “Are men – who generally don’t think twice about any of these things – really so much stronger than women?” As in, anyone who is not used to being alone is WEAK, unlike (real) men, such as Mr. Smith.
