A response (and agreement) of a much longer article in the American Prospect that casts Florida as a bit of a charlatan.

Ironically I think New Florida is right – only so many cities can succeed in a scenario where North America loses all its manufacturing. There can only be so many financial centres, Madison Avenues, Hollywoods etc.
But really, the whole model of gentrification he preaches is suspect. Let’s attract artists in the hopes that a few years later, we can evict them and move the yuppies in! I’d love to know of better development models, especially those that have succeeded in some places. Detroit’s new plan is certainly fascinating, but who knows if it will work.
