I’m not sure it’s anything new – under Hoover the FBI kept lists of thousands of “disloyal” Americans and, of course, there was McCarthyism …it took decades of legal wrangling (all the way to the Supreme Court) to declassify the volumes of FBI documents about John Lennon …9/11 is just another reason to finance a long-standing American tradition. (Have you seen the documentary The US vs. John Lennon ?)
