Android Isn’t About Building a Mobile Platform. ⇒

   7 January 2011, early morning

Android isn’t an attempt to build the best mobile platform and sell it on its merits; it’s a play to control the vast majority of the mobile market, secure eyeballs for Google advertising and eliminate any threat to Google.

A lot of people approach Google as an advertising company first when looking to criticize what they do. I think this is a fair approach, but there is a much more optimistic take on what they do which my friend Patrick wrote about some time ago:

I, however, still liken [Google] to Ferrari in that Ferrari is a racing company that sells cars to fund their racing. Google sells ads to fund their search engine technology related desires.

Don't be shy, you can comment too!

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
