A painting of me

US scientists have created zombie dogs. ⇒

This is amazing -- even though the dogs aren't quite zombies. This link was found via Dave.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. That is amazing. I hope that these experiments really go well, as there seems to be so many benefits that could come about from it.

  2. I wouldn’t get your hopes up. The dogs were clinically dead for only 3 hours.

  3. True, but if it was the sort of procedure paramedics could do, you could probably save lots of people who are seriously injured in accidents where they might die before they can make it to the hospital. Also, three hours is a long time to be clinically dead and then revived. It is still very impressive.

  4. I always get my hopes up from the smallest scientific break-throughs. Last time I heard some news about telemerase cell work, and I was happy all day. Imagine if we could stifle aging. Amazing.

  5. It’s a nice thought, but I doubt paramedics will ever perform this kind of procedure because of the time and equipment required. You also have to wonder how long the entire process takes since normal embalming can take several hours, depending on the size of the body. So I think it’s unlikely to be an option for people so seriously injured that they might die before reaching a hospital. But if they do survive the trip to the hospital, I suppose the procedure could take place.

Anyway, it would be interesting to look back at, say, the previous decade’s “medical breakthroughs” and compare their promised (ie. imagined) benefits with their actual payoffs.

  6. If I were an older man, I think Viagra would be payoff enough.

But otherwise, there have been some strong breakthroughs in anti-infammatories, (though some did get pulled from the market like Vioxx and Celebrex). Also, some really innovative treatments for cancer, i.e. for prostates. And, also even some vainity treatments like botox, are now being used for very serious procedures. It helps to strengthen muscles in disabled children with things SB, CP, etc. Some can now even walk due to the botox injections (they are injected between the leg muscles).

I’m all for medical science, and against holoistic medicine.

  7. Edgar Allan Poe and his fascinating stories (science fiction?) have been vindicated.

He was and remains the greatest American writer ever.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
