Toronto Life screws Jane Jacobs? ⇒

   15 August 2011, lunch time

It doesn’t look like the article this is a response to is online. Sucks. It sounds like they are trying to spin ‘white flight’ as a good thing. (Though, my sense is that people leaving, or being pushed out of, the city are probably minorities.)

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. reading the TL article I had the sense that the Jane Jacobs tie-in (especially “screw Jane Jacobs”) was really just sensationalist.

to me the article was mainly about the “benefits” of living outside the city, illustrated with examples and anecdotes. The article didn’t present a particularly balanced view, but I think it’s safe to assume most TL readers are already familiar with the benefits of living in the city, so this was maybe just another perspective.

I didn’t see it as being about “white flight” or anything really political or social — more presenting the economic and social picture of what it’s like to live outside Toronto. Personally it didn’t sound too tempting.

  2. Thanks. It’s hard to get a sense of what’s up from the cover and the first couple paragraphs of a story.

  3. Ex-woburnite Denise Balkissoon on the story.

  4. am I just really desensitized? Is the desire to move out of downtown/Toronto typically racially-motivated?

  5. Presumably for some people. I don’t think that’s widespread though. (Or maybe i’m also desensitized. Hah.) I don’t think there are any brown people moving to Coburg, though.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
