Mattism: Ethnic Relations II: Carole Bell and Markham's Racial Tensions ⇒

   7 July 2005, late afternoon

Matt's series on the Asian community in Markham continues. This is a great read for those interested in the history of the area.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. Only hole here is “Chinese people are taxpayers”. =p Maybe some, but we might need to adjust the math a little bit. Or is that only Scarborough?

Truth be told though, you can’t let Chinese people have their way when it comes to racial interaction. We are not an understanding race by nature. We certainly have something to learn here in Canada, and would not benefit from a lasez fair attitude of “let them choose or not choose” to be part of the greater community. Because, we will “choose not to” as a group.

Chinese / Asian people are from xenophobic countries, they were raised that way. So unless an outside force modifies their vector, they will only further alienate themselves from western culture. I don’t mean to say Chinese people should be “re-cast” wholesale as Westerners, but at least try a little to get a to know a few, beyond grinning at the gwalow you took to dim sum who is amazed by the duck tongues and selection of intestines.

  2. well, you can’t expect a lot from a bunch of people who call themselves the Middle Kingdom, right.

(not a slam nor an excuse. I’m pointing out the psychology that naturally derives from a piece of language.)

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
