That’s so weird. I spent a few years of my childhood in Scarborough but never really realized it was really all that bad (or it’s rep. for being bad) until years later. I guess part of that is not being from the “worst” parts of Scarborough, part of it is being oblivious (as a child.. and as an adult!), and part of it is that it seems like it has gotten a lot worse since I used to live there.
It’s also weird to me that I was never aware of gang stuff at school until after I left Scarborough to live in North York—I don’t remember hearing about a single stabbing or shooting at schools (again, possibly due to the obliviousness factor) when I was living in Scarborough, but there were at least a few incidents at my North York schools.
