The European Union plans to declare the LTTE a terrorist organization. They are doing so in response to the murder of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, a murder the LTTE have denied having any involvement in.

  1. How about the murder of Rajiv Gandhi, a foreign PM? They deny that as well?

  2. I think common LTTE practice is to never claim responsibility for anything. I actually think it is uncommon for them to flat out deny something. I may be totally wrong on this. I can’t remember when Rajiv Gandhi was killed at all.

  3. “It is popularly believed amongst the many communities in Sri Lanka that the suicide bomber Dhanu who assassinated the Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 was apparently avenging the rape she experienced at the hands of the Indian Peace Keeping Forces (IPKF). Her actions within the militant LTTE were, therefore, connected to her being violated as a woman. Dhanu completed her mission under the guise of garlanding the man who had deployed the IPKF who had raped her. Eerily, brides also perform this ritual on their grooms at a wedding—an observation that has not escaped public attention.” – source

also, one would be a fool – a damn fool (lols) – to think that the LTTE pulled such a stunt like that on their own. it’s interesting to note which of Rajiv’s own ppl that were absent on that day, not to even mention his political foes in the BJP. politics is politics is politics. lastly, i think the Tigers did India an immense favour by taking him out, which set up a BJP victory in the next federal elections. and for all their hindu-fundie psycho blabber, they opened up india’s markets and are credited for the boom that is india’s economy.

as for the LTTE and claiming responsibility, they do own up for their antics, in the sense they don’t deny it. and trust me, as much as i wish the Tigers popped dat a-hole traitor, there is a strong argument for why his own party did it. that being he was toting the extremist JVP line of no negiotiations with the Tigers, which makes the Madame look stupid. plus, there’s the obvious, how the fcuk do you pop THE MOST guarded man in sri lanka from the house next door. something doesn’t add up.

  4. also, ram, i’m not sure where u’re getting, “The European Union plans to declare the LTTE a terrorist organization.” they only placed a travel ban on delegations for the “time being”. there exists the possibility, dat after the U.K. (where they are banned) finishes their Presidency this year, it will be removed. one has to note the LTTE, last year, was frequently visiting the governments of sweden, denmark, norway, switzerland, italy, ireland. their trips were to learn/discuss various models of federalism and power sharing.

  5. India’s markets opened up under the Congress as well under the FM Manmohan Singh (who also happens to be the PM now). BJP had little to do with except continuing the process even under the stunting pressure of leftist / socialist (includes the commies and the Congress) causes in India.

The IPFK would never have been in Sri Lanka if the LTTE was not funding and supporting separatist forces in the South of India.

That article leaves a bad taste in mouth. So this is neo-feminism—romanticizing terrorists.

  6. Yeah Pathi, the only thing the BJP is good at is lynching Muslims—and that is hardly a good accomplishment.

  7. There were numerous reasons why the IPKF wanted to go into SL. I think it’s fallacious to conclude that the LTTE support of Tamil Nadu separatists was the major reason. Have you forgotten who trained (first link that came up in google) the LTTE?

But like all of SL’s history, there is never a simple answer. I think it does a disservice to discussions to dumb it down. I also like alliteration.

  8. Wow! Read the footnotes as well.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google.
