A painting of me

Sony Pictures: Memoirs Of A Geisha. ⇒

   17 October 2005, early evening

The three key Geishas in the book, Sayuri, Mameha, and the evil Hatsumomo, are played by a Chinese lady, a Malaysian lady, and a Chinese lady, respectively. I think all three actresses are amazing, but am curious as to how people feel about the roles not going to Japanese actresses. This happens all the time I suppose; Dennis Hopper played a Serbian in 24. (All that said, the trailer is awesome.)

  1. Don’t get me started when white people of various ethnicities play white people of various ethnicities. It disgusts me.

  2. Michelle Yeoh is of Chinese descent, no?

I don’t see what the big deal is. Lucy Liu also played a Japanese girl in Kill Bill.

  3. I guess so yeah; she is Malaysian Chinese.

  4. No, she played a half Jap, half AmeriChink.

    Totally different.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
