They need to get some editors watching over the links coming in at Digg. 900+ people thought this was interesting "news".

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. Does he have any other unsolved theorems? I am almost certain I heard my prof say it hasn’t been solved. This is breaking news to me.

  2. Krishna, the only possible way your prof could have meant that the theorem was still unsolved (without being completely wrong) is that if he meant that Fermat’s original solution, which he claimed to have, has still been unfound.

Wiles’ theorem is ridiculously complex and included mathematics developed only very recently, so it could not possibly be the solution that Fermat alluded to. Of course, a lot of people just feel that Fermat was incorrect about his proof, not realizing just how devilishly difficult the simple looking problem is.

Read this book for the whole story. (If that link breaks stuff, please fix my monkey mistakes Ram, thanks).

  3. I have a book called Fermat’s Last Theorem if you want to borrow it, Krishna.

  4. Yes I would. Perhaps I shall borrow it from you towards the end of the term.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
