Tamiliana: Palmyra land gets Palestine style Intifada. ⇒

A long article on the student protests in Jaffna. The protests are getting a bit more press (because the Sri Lankan army has been shooting the protesters).

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. Unfortunately the earlier spirit of revolutionary resistance soon gave way to a shameful display of sycophancy and adulation. The meetings became ceremonies of mass veneration for LTTE chief Velupillai Pirapakaran. [...] The nadir of these demonstrations was the sight of Tamil Parliamentarians carrying pictures of Pirapakaran publicly like Hindu devotees carrying “kavadi”.

That was exactly my thought on the Pongu Tamil event that was held at Queen’s Park in Sept. ‘04. How could it be legitimately be looked upon as a student led, student inspired demonstration against injustice, with so many people “worshipping.” Don’t get me wrong, I understand the reverence to some degree. Whether you agree or not, the Tigers have de facto rule where none existed 20 years ago. But

[t]he overall heroism of the Tamil people defying overwhelming odds was ignored.

And the overall history of the Tamil people is continually overshadowed by modern events. A 2000+ year culture cannot be, and is not, reflected in the modern conflict.

In the end, it pains me to see the situation devolve; but a stagnant intractable army presence isn’t a solution either.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
