Ten reasons why you should never accept a diamond ring. ⇒

I still know girls who thing diamond rings are an investment. I guess they've never been to a pawn shop. (The Ask.Mefi thread I found this link in is also very entertaining.) This link was found via Ask.Mefi.
This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.
Does it make you angry that you’re dating someone who wants a diamond ring?
You know what, at this point I’ll take anything, it doesn’t even have to be a diamond ring.. heck, it doesn’t even have to be a ring… your “engagement sweater” is looking tempting. :P

No I don’t care at all. We’ve had this conversation before I am sure. I just think that was a concise list of everything that is wrong with diamonds.

7% of the World’s diamonds are mined from the Northwest Territories. If your worried about your conscience then just get one of those. (That would eliminate 6 of reasons).
And an investment is only an investment if you plan on selling it (which most people don’t). So I don’t think the (suggested lack of) resale value is a real constraint either.

Agreed. I think those people that complain it’s not worth anything are missing the point. With respect to buying them from the NWT however, I think it still indirectly props up the industry as a whole. Afterall, Diamonds in Africa are only worth something because people want to buy them. Paying a premium for the rocks anywhere gives them value. And as the article points out, there is still the chance the diamonds from Canada are cut and polished in India (though I would need to look into that more).

Long story short Shima: Ram is going to mine, cut and then polish the diamond himself in the end. Sure it might take a little longer, but it’ll be worth it.
