A painting of me

Haran.org: We are all Danes now? ⇒

   6 February 2006, early afternoon

Haran neatly sums up my thoughts on this matter.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. Actually the most interesting aspect of this brouhaha is that the European cafe set and the Arab street agree on the what free speech really means. Its quite easy to see which side is winning in the crusade of western ideals against islamism.

And the reason why the newspapers didn’t print it because today we have created a polictically correct society. Can’t hurt anyone’s feelings folks. Free speech be damned.

If I am prejudiced towards a person on the ground of her religion, that is racism / hate. But if I criticize her religion, that’s my fucking right. There is a crucial distinction there that needs to be made.

But like I said, we have already lost that war.

  2. I’d argue that inflammatory critism would be classified as a hate crime. The legislatures in Canada and the the US would tend to agree.

Deem it political correctness if you will, but like everything, it’s balanced on the edge of a blade.

Also, don’t let the freedom of expression fool you. There are limits to speech, and that’s entrenched in prolly every Constitution. You can’t blame the “A-rabs” for that.

  3. Who is blaming the Arabs? I am blaming the west for the death of the ideals. It might pay to read what I said.

I am not sure about the legislation of the States or Canada but in England and Australia (some states) we are getting very stricter definitions of these “feel good” laws.

And the point I am making is that these laws are not balanced at all (atleast the newer legislation coming in now) which are being enacted for one reason only – don’t piss-off Muslims.

  4. Sometimes I read between the lines, but my apologies if that was not the subtext.

I understand your point, I’ll have to claim ignorance because I just can’t think of any statutes that fit the profile of being enacted to “not piss off muslims”.

Perhaps you could point me to the appropriate legislation or bills in motion that you’re referring to.

  5. Dunno if this fits the type of laws you were mentioning, but Sepia Mutiny had a timely link.

    Blasphemous bill ejected from Parliament

  6. Haran,

Yes, that was the legislation that I was referring to. I had no idea that it didn’t pass. Seems it was really close.

I will try to dig up the legislation in Queensland, Australia over the weekend.

    Good find, mate.

  7. Wow, I just lost all respect for this man. What a bitter and stupid person.

  8. Did you link to the wrong post or something? I”m not sure what this has to do with the latest Muslim-rage scandal.

Also, I lost respect for Dave Winer a long time ago. He says dumb stuff all the time.

  9. He removed it. Typical of him.

It was your standard Jews are victims and shame on muslims blah..blah..

    Childish, boorish, disgusting.

I wonder if it will show up in a Google cache somewhere.

I wish I had taken a screenshot. But who knew that a person who bitches so much about transparency and accountability would pull this?

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
