And I can’t decide that it’s any better than using a Java applet (aside from it not being a Java applet).

Their reasoning for the product does seem sound: I mean, IRC isn’t that complicated, but it is far from intuitive. My dad couldn’t set up an IRC channel, but I am guessing he could set up one of these campfire channels. The real question is how much desire there is for a product such as this.
I'd try it out myself, but 37signals is on my list of things to boycott with furious irrationality, just like America.
