This is why the world has an unfavourable view of Americans.

  1. first off, stuff like this happens in a lot of places by people other than Americans

second, i’m coming to find that having an unfavourable view of the US is also a major function of not being critical of your own nation. This is even more so in most of the arab world where being critical of your own government usually gets you shot or arrested.

“there is no such thing as a spontaneous protest in Damascus”

  2. So the US is a more awesome country than Syria? I personally don’t think that is much of an accomplishment. I think the leader of the free world should hold itself up to higher standards. It's pretty scary how much the US has in common with all these countries it complains to no end about.

Canada does disappoint me every so often, but I think we can safely say Canada hasn’t ruined any countries through its actions. In fact, I don’t think you can really compare the US and Canada at all.

  3. You mean recently in Canada…? Cause there’s probably a lot of Aboriginal people who disagree with you.

I can’t imagine that we’re guilt free recently either, but because my knowledge of Canadian history is dreadfully lacking, I can’t come up with anything.

  4. Oh that’s quite true Haran; Juan and I were actually just talk about that when we were watching Shadow Company. We did participate on the sanctions against Iraq, we do trade with a lot of questionable countries (Indonesia under Suharto for example). I think you can find more examples such as this. I don’t think we’ve toppled foreign governments in a manner similar to the US however, or lent support to do so.

America seems to have decided to pick up the slack after WWII and become the worlds leading imperial power. And you can say they were trying to stop Communism all you want, it doesn’t seem to be all too excusable.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
