Did you read any of the articles or the comments in the thread? There is a lot of interesting stuff on gender roles being discussed in the thread now. The articles themselves are pretty good.

The article is totally wrong. Girls don’t play MMO’s. In fact, the girls that they got to answer the survey are probably just guys pretending to be girls.
MMO’s are 100% about social interaction. In the end of it all, how successful you are in an MMO (if that can be a quantifiable term) is directly related to 2 things: The total time you can pour into the game, and your ability to lead a large group of people to success. Once you get to a hardcore level, though, the amount of time you can pour into the game is limited by the number of hours in a day, so it almost becomes entirely dependant on how social you are.
Spend 24hrs/day hanging out with the same small group of people and eventually you’ll get really attached to them. I think that’s the part that gets people into thinking they’re in love, but whether they’re truly in love with the person playing on the other side, or just some avatar on the screen is totally different.
