It is a great idea, but extremely costly. It’s more expensive to retrofit a green roof onto an existing building than it is to implement one during new building construction, and those costs even start at $10-15/sqft. Unfortunately, most developers like to build as cheaply as they can, and the first place they cut their budget is the landscape – nevermind even proposing a green roof! They don’t care about the long term benefits and energy savings for the buildings because they eventually get turned over to new owners, who at that point cannot afford to make such drastic changes.
I would love to have a greener Toronto. We should follow in the footsteps of places like Germany. I believe it is now a law for their developers to replace the area of land they’ve removed on every new roof.
Torontonians are cheap.
