Replace South American with Tamil guy and this post describes Toronto equally well. This link was found via Kottke.org.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. That article bothers me. It seems like they want credit for being working-class citizens, just like I am. I’m in the catering business and do quite a bit of cooking myself—but I don’t know—to me it’s like they wanting people to recognize the fact most sous chefs are not what you’d expect: an excellent chef AND your Mexican, like it’s some sort of job only “real” people can do. The tone of the piece was pretty negative and abrasive, this is what got me:

“So the next time you go out to eat remember our hardworking Hispanic brothers and sisters who make your dining experience possible.”

... as if to say they’re doing us the favor.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it.

  2. If you want good Italian food in Toronto, you gotta go to the restaurant with the most Tamil guys in the kitchen. Guaranteed satisfaction.

  3. The site is called Waiter Rant, so I guess it is expected to be abrasive. But I think the post was more a jab at the elite who don’t expect working class people to be able to cook. Really some of your “I never want to cater again” posts are in a similar vein wouldn’t you say? Though perhaps we are both getting different things from this post.

And it’s really surprising how many Tamil guys cook at some of the nicer restaurants in the city. Tamil dudes show up in the most random places. My mom was speaking to the cooks at Ikea in Tamil—Ikea.

  4. I suppose my “I never want to cater again” rants are in a similar vein, I wouldn’t disagree with that. Maybe he was right. Most of the time, the most annoying customers are the ones high up in the pecking order.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
