A painting of me

"I defend a woman's right to wear a headscarf as much as I defend a woman's right to wear a miniskirt." ⇒

Politics in Turkey certainly is complicated. This quote comes from Turkish MP Egeman Bagis, who is part of the Islamist party currently in power. Islamic parties apparently don't last long in Turkey because the military will depose those parties it thinks are messing up Turkey's secular system of government.

  1. Woot! Secular rules.

  2. I agree, but Turkey seems to be going about it wrong in my opinion. Freedom of religion is a reasonable thing to expect in a democracy. You should be able to go to University and wear a head scarf. It’s discriminatory otherwise. (Here is a Frontline video on this topic.)

  3. Yup, I agree with regards to freedom of expression.

However my personal opinion on religion (overall) is negative, so if I were to set rules, there would be no religion in my school. And I would know that I am hurting freedom of expression, but my own convictions would have to win out, which is not dissimilar to strong feelings people have towards religion. (Personal Rant)

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
