Top Islamist ponders return to Toronto. ⇒

   8 January 2007, late morning

Actually, if you read the article it sounds like coming back to Toronto is the last thing on his mind. Alarmist headlines are awesome.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. Let me parse my own headline:

    1) Somali Islamist could return to Canada.

Abdullahi Afrah is an Islamist, which means he adheres to a radical interpretation of Islam. He believes society should be ruled by sharia law. He was given Canadian citizenship. At present Canada has no legal means of keeping him out should he choose to return.

Whether this particular man returns is one issue. Of equal concern is that many others who share his beliefs have also been given Canadian citizenship. They too have the right to return to Canada from Somalia.

Our immigration and refugee policies have allowed Muslim extremists to settle in Canada where they have acquired Canadian citizenship. This is cause for concern. Canadians should be aware of this.

    2) US government links Union of Islamic Courts to al-Qaeda

The US government has made serious allegations against the Union of Islamic Courts. This too is cause for concern. That the US government believes there is a link with al-Qaeda has important political implications regardless of whether the charge is true or not. Canada cannot afford to ignore the American claims. This is an important issue. Canadians should be paying attention

  2. To point one, I would argue that only a weak democracy is unable to tolerate dissenting speech and thought. I also question how much trouble orthodox Muslims cause in Canada compared to other orthodox religious groups. I think Muslims are just the pariah of the moment.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
