Ask.Mefi: How do I become a better programmer? ⇒

   5 February 2007, lunch time

I'm always wary of people who suggest you read The Art of Computer Programming or Design Patterns. I don't think either book is going to get you coding better.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. how about “practice”?

    I often spot this telltale while interviewing:

    for (int positionInString = 0; positionInString < strlen(theString); positionInString++)
    Zomg(theString[positionInString]);

    guys, programmers have a name for loop counters. That name is “i”. If you’re going to make up something longer, choose something that isn’t redundant. Dead giveaway that you don’t write code particularly often.

    I noticed Joel on Software mentions this point too.

Don't be shy, you can comment too!

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
