This was announced ages ago, but they are just acting on it now. I’m hoping we’ll start seeing much better plans up here now that you can just pick up and leave with your number when your plan starts to suck — assuming you are without a contract anyway.

Too late. Most carriers predicted this and already put in place mechanisms to deter people from changing. Such as the ‘administration’ fee required to take the number with you. And many of the new plans have clauses in them that have severe penalties if you cancel the contract and take the number with you to go elsewhere, rather than just canceling the contract or something to that effect.
Sounds good on paper, less good to your wallet.
