MSFT, Xbox 360 and Japan: Failure-in-a-Box. ⇒

   19 April 2007, late morning

An interesting article on Microsofts misadventures in console gaming. The 360, despite being kick-ass, as far as I can tell, is a big money hole for Microsoft.

  1. We will see how this one pans out. But perhaps we can take a page from hold’em poker on this one. MSFT is the big stack, and it might not be getting the best hands, but it’s pushing people around all over the place. Now as long as it’s stack is THAT much bigger then the other players (which I think it is), one day someone else is going to go all in and MSFT is going to take them out of the game. When that happens, they will win.

On a side note, consider that Nintendo being what could have been the small stack before, at risk of going out went all in with the Wii and doubled up. This now actually moves the pressure to Sony and not MSFT, cause Sony needs to succeed in their gaming division as well, while MSFT only needs to be in the game. So if Wii takes out PS in the market for now, MSFT will be ready to take back over the high end segment, which they won’t have to share with anyone. And from the looks of things, PS3 might be outselling 360’s in various places in Asia, but overall it’s not really kicking ass.

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
