Clearly the biggest problem facing Iran today is haircuts.

This is outrageous in that it is a complete set back to modernization. This is not impressive at all. A country that can allow this kind of act to not just pass through, but take up the time of their law makers is obviously a little off kilter in their priorities and attitudes.
This frightens when you consider that although haircuts and clothes are innocuous, it brings into question what other backwards, or perhaps even dangerous attitudes and laws their lawmakers are pursuing.

in defense, there are a lot of academics from the Western world supporting this line of thinking – this anti-modernity thinking as a way to restore islam. ALthough maybe not to the extent of banning “western” hairstyle, it is a common assertion that the Islamic identity needs some sort of restoration independent of western influence. If you consider the other perspective, it’s easy to associate modernity (western inlfuence) to the fall of Islam. Just look at european colonialization of Muslim states in the 19th century.
I just don’t think these articles do justice to illustrate the other side of the argument

I get where they are coming from, but banning haircuts isn’t going to accomplish what they want. They need to come up with Islamic haircuts that are so cool people in America are going to want them. They should really be trying to export Ahmadinejad Islamic Casual look: tailored suits, no ties. Marjane Satrapi has a couple of cute panels in Persepolis showing how different sorts of people in Iran dressed before and after the revolution.
