  1. Have you read “The World Is Flat”? One of the comments by the author was that the US should decide to become energy independent within a decade – kind of like Kennedy’s putting a man-on-the-moon goal.

His point was the the US would train lots of scientists and engineers, which would help the economy (e.g. by branching out in other areas & solving other problems; competing with the large number of Chinese & Indian engineers, etc.)

But there are lots of other benefits – a rational foreign policy (no need to get involved in the Middle East and buddy up the with the World’s dictators), price stability for energy, fight global warming, etc.

If you can put a man on the moon, why no energy independence? (e.g. Brazil has done it supposedly).

  2. Yeah I read the book a while back. I thought it was a good idea too. I’m sure there is some evil conspiracy reason for why they don’t pursue that goal though.

  3. If the US were to pursue energy indepedence, the subsequent effect would be the cannibalization of their defense industry.

Don't be shy, you can comment too!

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
