Sweeping cancer edict: take vitamin D daily. ⇒
8 June 2007, early morning
It can cut the risk of getting cancer by up to 60% apparently.
This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.
First of all, YAY, I always knew there was a reason I loved getting darker in the summer.
Second, does anyone know why they didn’t test the effects of having just Vitamin D? I read in the Star that the experiment included patients that either took placebo pills, Calcium pills or Calcium and Vitamin D pills. Does that make sense? And if so, should I be taking Calcium and Vitamin D or could I just take Vitamin D and still be okay? Does Calcium help our body absorb Vitamin D faster/better?

I’d just take vitamin D if you have a generally well rounded diet with some dairy and green veggies. Look for D3 rather than D2 as it is more easily absorbed/more bioactive. Too much calcium can be a bad thing so I wouldn’t take that as a supplement unless your doctor or dietitian saw a need to. You only need to spend 15 minutes in the sun to produce the vitamin D that you need – if you’re getting that amount daily in the summer then maybe don’t bother taking the supplements between june and september.
As a general rule there isn’t strong evidence for supplementation for most people but this Vitamin D work is quite solid.
