ESL funds used to heat schools. ⇒

The Toronto School Board is so cash strapped it has to use ESL funding for general school maintenance. Why is Toronto so broke ass?
This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.
Its not just low funding, schools waste their money on random crap too. My school had a useless pond. A pond! What school needs a craptastic pond? Now that pond is just covered in bushes and junk, no one takes care of it. The only people you find there are druggies and drunks.

I was an ESL kid, which meant special ed apparently because the Catholic school board had no funding to teach us differently. So perhaps I have ADD as well. I can honestly say that my school didn’t waste any money instead of investing in special needs children (read: me). We were so broke ass that we had to cancel ski trips (which were never free anyway) and we cross-country skiied in the school yard with the school’s 50 year old skiies.

According to the propaganda I received with my final property tax assessment, Toronto is so broke-ass because 30% of the city’s property taxes goes towards provincially-mandated programs.
One one would think that provincial taxes would be used to cover the sphere of provincial services and municipal taxes would be used to cover the sphere of municipal services, but I guess that’s not how we like to roll in Ontario. The pamphlet also clarified that this practice does not take place in other provinces.

I think what happened when Harris was in power was that he said, “Hey, if we put Toronto in charge of all this stuff and make them pay for it, we can save money.” Except, that doesn’t make any sense, since Toronto is in Ontario.

I think what you meant to say was “Toronto is Ontario”. =P
