I’ll admit to not having delved into this article very heavily, even though I’ve heard a lot of talk about it lately. This debate pops up in the weeklies every once in a while, and nothing new ever really comes of it.
Personally, and you can take this for what it’s worth since it comes from a straight white guy, I don’t think it’s the problem it’s made out to be. At any rate, I’ve never seen signs of active discrimination within the indie community, or what have you, and I’ve never seen anyone call for more visible minorities at shows without looking at least a bit ridiculous.
Personally, I’d rather talk about what can be done to increase communication among niche music scenes. That seems like it could have much more benefit than trying to hit arbitrary racial quotas, or what have you.
