To Use a UV Filter or Not. ⇒

   10 July 2007, early morning

I think putting filters in front of expensive lens is a waste of money. The front element on most lenses is quite durable.

This is a post from my link log: If you click the title of this post you will be taken the web page I am discussing.

  1. I always have a UV filter on. Durable or not, the thought of scratching a lens makes my inner child’s lip get all quivery and tears start filling his eyes.

  2. I usually have one on my 17-40mm f/4 L, which is my most expensive lens, but this is mostly because it came with a very expensive B+W filter. I haven’t bought one for my 85mm lens. I think people underestimate how tough a lens is. Of course, when a rock flies out of nowhere and scuffs my lens 85mm lens, I’ll have to rewrite this comment.

Don't be shy, you can comment too!

Some things to keep in mind: You can style comments using Textile. In particular, *text* will get turned into text and _text_ will get turned into text. You can post a link using the command "linktext":link, so something like "google":http://www.google.com will get turned in to google. I may erase off-topic comments, or edit poorly formatted comments; I do this very rarely.
